Christie’s Scores $7M at Shanghai Luxury Sale
A 25.13-carat yellow-diamond ring was the top seller at the most recent luxury sale at Christie’s in Shanghai, fetching CNY 20.3 million ($2.8 million), more than double its high estimate.
The cut-cornered square modified brilliant-cut, fancy-vivid-yellow, VVS2-clarity diamond ring, by Bulgari, had an upper price of CNY 8.5 million ($1.2 million) at the September 23 sale, Christie’s said last week. In total, the event — named the 10th Shanghai Auction Anniversary: Luxury Evening Sale — brought in CNY 52.9 million ($7.3 million).
Other leading items at the auction included a marquise brilliant-cut, 11.16-carat, D-color, internally flawless, type IIa diamond ring by Van Cleef & Arpels, which went for CNY 7.3 million ($999,611), within its estimate. A Harry Winston ring bearing an emerald-cut, 10.07-carat, D-flawless diamond flanked by two tapered baguette-cut diamonds fetched CNY 6.6 million ($897,140), just over its high estimate.
Meanwhile, a pair of Harry Winston earrings from 1959 with pear mixed-cut Colombian emeralds weighing a total of 14.45 carats also beat its estimate. The set, which contains 42 round, marquise-cut and pear-shaped diamonds weighing a total of 19.45 carats, garnered CNY 4 million ($547,655), above its CNY 3.5 million ($479,198) upper price. A pair of earrings from Van Cleef & Arpels with the same high estimate scored the same final price. The item featured two oval brilliant-cut sapphires of 25.42 and 19.58 carats, and two cushion-shaped brilliant-cut sapphires of 11.66 and 9.97 carats, as well as round, marquise-cut and pear-shaped diamonds.
Along with jewelry, Christie’s offered a variety of Hermès handbags at the sale.
