Hindman to Launch New York Auctions with Single-Owner Watch Sale
Chicago-based Hindman auction house will open its inaugural New York sales on October 18 with a single-owner auction of more than 100 timepieces.
Titled Time & Space: Watches from the Collection of Glen de Vries, the auction will feature timepieces from approximately 30 important watchmakers including F.P. Journe, Richard Mille, A. Lange & Söhne, De Bethune, Patek Philippe, Urwerk, Audemars Piguet, Hublot, Vacheron Constantin, and H. Moser & Cie.
The items reflect the collector’s passion for science, space, aviation, and speed, the auction house said last week.
De Vries was a successful entrepreneur and adventurer who was best known as the cofounder of Medidata Solutions, a technology company that develops and markets software for clinical trials. In October 2021, he was part of a group who flew on Blue Origin NS-18 in a suborbital spaceflight. A certified pilot, he was killed in a small plane crash in New Jersey on November 11, 2021, aged 49.
The top lots in the sale include:
- A platinum Tourbillon Souverain Black Label watch by F.P. Journe, which is expected to fetch up to $450,000.
- An RM-6101 Yohan Blake by Richard Mille, designed for Yohan Blake, an Olympic sprinter and the second-fastest man ever in 100 meter and 200 meter races, with an estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.
- A De Bethune Ref. DB28XP titanium watch with an expected range of $80,000 to $120,000.
Following the de Vries collection sale, Hindman will hold a second watch auction featuring vintage and contemporary pieces. Watch brands include Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Tiffany & Co., Omega, Breitling, Hublot, Cartier, Franck Muller, IWC, Panerai, and Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The auction series will run from October 18 to 26 at 21 Greene Street in Soho and will highlight single-owner sales.
“Each sale boasts magnificent examples of works built by passionate collectors who were inspired by a myriad of different disciplines and styles,” said Gemma Sudlow, Hindman’s managing director for the New York region.
