Lucapa Diamond Company has unearthed a 150-carat, D-color, type IIa diamond at its Lulo mine in Angola, the first rough stone above 100 carats from the deposit this year.

The diamond is the fifth over 100 carats to come from the Mining Block 28 portion of the site, Lucapa said Thursday. Overall, it’s the 36th rough weighing more than 100 carats the Lulo mine has produced.

Last year, the miner unearthed five stones of that scale from the deposit, three of them in September. They included a 113-carat, type IIa rough and diamonds of 131 and 160 carats.

Separately, Lucapa recently retrieved 36 diamonds from a bulk sample of two kimberlite pipes at Lulo, with the largest stone weighing 2.38 carats. The ore is the highest grade the miner has recovered from a Lulo kimberlite sample to date, it said.
